The Glory of the Thermae Antoninianae

Commissioned by Emperor Caracalla and completed between 212 and 216 AD, the Thermae Antoninianae stood as a testament to Roman engineering and luxury. Located on the Piccolo Aventino near the Via Appia, these Roman baths were supplied with water from the Aqua Antoniniana, a branch of the Aqua Marcia aqueduct.

The ruins feature a classic rectangular layout typical of imperial bath complexes, including grand halls such as the calidarium, tepidarium, frigidarium, and the open-air natatio. More than just a bathing facility, this site once bustled with activity—exercise in the palestre, study in the libraries, and socializing in the gardens.

Art, Engineering, and Mysticism

The grandeur of the original decor is still visible. Historical sources describe towering marble columns, colorful mosaic floors, painted stucco ceilings, and hundreds of statues that once decorated the baths’ interiors and lush surroundings.

Below ground lies a vast network of underground chambers, where Roman ingenuity truly shines. These service areas included storage rooms, furnaces, and water systems. One of the most fascinating discoveries is the Mitreo, one of the largest Mithraic temples in Rome. Featuring the symbolic fossa sanguinis, it may have been used for initiation rites, adding a mystical layer to this iconic site. Please note: the Mitreo is accessible only during special events.
