Rome has officially opened the Colosseo – Fori Imperiali station on Metro Line C, a landmark in both public transport and cultural heritage. Opened on 16 December 2025, after more than 12 years of construction, the station sits beneath Via dei Fori Imperiali, connecting the Colosseum with the Roman Forum and offering travelers a seamless journey through the heart of ancient Rome.
A Metro Station and Underground Museum in One
What makes Colosseo – Fori Imperiali truly unique is that it is more than a metro station — it is a museum. As you descend through the station’s four underground levels, you will encounter:
- Original archaeological finds, including wells, Roman-era household objects, and structural remains,
- Multimedia exhibits and dioramas that recreate life in ancient Rome,
- Informative panels and curated pathways, making each visit a cultural journey.
Visitors can experience Rome’s layers of history while waiting for their train, turning a simple commute into an unforgettable educational experience.
One of the highlights is the remains of a private residence dating back to the 1st century BCE, known as Edificio 2. Its refined floors and architectural structures were carefully restored and installed inside the station. Among the most fascinating discoveries are:
- A private balneum (bath) with a small pool featuring three steps for cold water immersion,
- A laconicum, a circular steam bath where wealthy owners could sit around a cylindrical masonry hearth, controlling temperature and humidity like a sauna,
- Decorative pavements and elegant rooms that reveal the luxury lifestyle of ancient Roman elites.
The building suffered heavy damage during Nero’s famous fire of 64 CE, was later cleared and partially dismantled, and eventually remained untouched under the foundations of the Domus Aurea. These finds are now on display inside the station, allowing visitors to experience a tangible connection with daily life in ancient Rome.
Perfectly Located for Tourists
The station is ideally situated for travelers:
- Just steps from the Colosseum and Roman Forum,
- With a direct underground connection to Metro Line B,
- Allowing easy access to central Rome and other major attractions.
